Someone mentioned Dickie being friend with David and Bertie. Again, i must share my thoughts and stories!
When Bertie was at Cambridge, Dickie came to join a few years later. They did not hang out for Bertie very much preferred the company of the older people such as his comptroller, Louis Greig's and Dickie didn't. Dickie, however, always asked Bertie to persuade David to let him hang out with. So most of the time he bypassed Bertie for David. Cared very little for what Bertie had to say.
Chip Channon and Duff Cooper, the diarists, once invented the term 'Rat Week' meaning the time of post Abdication where anyone immediately switch sides. And Dickie was one of those who promptly shown to be affectionate toward Bertie and his family (where he never cared a fig before). So yeah, that's all i can think of for now.
I remember seeing some WWI era letters exchanged between Bertie and Dickie (possibly while at Cambridge). They’re rather amusing; one involves Bertie wanting to go party and meet girls only for his father to show up on campus and proceed to make things very difficult. But over all girls and parties were more David’s scene.
I’ve always felt that Dickie and David probably did have a bit of fun together and Dickie liked both Bertie and David, but Dickie was so ambitious and selfish he couldn’t be a good friend to anyone. David was his best friend for almost twenty years yet Dickie had no problem just jumping ship. Then he didn’t go to David’s wedding and had the nerve to lie to everyone and pretend he wasn’t invited. Except The Firm; he probably told them to truth. There was even a poem made about “Rat Week” but I find Dickie’s behavior the worst because he was an actual close friend and not a hanger-on like many of the others. Then some thirty years later when the heat is off Dickie tries to be buddy-buddy with David because he and Wallis didn’t have kids and Dickie wanted them to leave him their stuff (well, some of their stuff, he wanted stuff he didn’t want left to his “honorary grandson” Prince Charles and a few other royals) when they died. Then after David died, Dickie had the nerve to pretend to be friends with Wallis (who he’d never liked and had insulted behind her back for years) in the hopes her memory was far gone enough she’d forgotten what a treacherous slimeball he was. When that failed to get him her money, he gave up and got his revenge by telling every trash biographer who would listen what an ugly bitch Wallis had always been.
Dickie and Bertie didn’t have that much in common, particularly after they married and Bertie settled down to be a family man while Dickie cheated on his wife every chance he got. I honestly wish the Queen Mum had just slammed the door on his face and cut him out of royal life like they did to David. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’d wanted to. I suspect some of her initial disdain for Philip was because he was Dickie’s nephew.
Thank you hun - 1992 was indeed the Queen's 'annus horribilius'! Think you've left me with a developing crush on Timothy now - beginning to see that strern sailorness... ^.^
And indeed, whoever thinks of Anne as boring don't know much about the Royals at all. She's got some one-liners that're right up there with her father's! XD
Anne is sort of the dark horse of the Windsor clan. I’m not really a fan because she’s just too loyal to her awful brother, but there are things about her to admire. There’s much more to her than meets the eye.
Did Louis Mountbatten ever hang out with Bertie? I see tons of him with David, but none with Bertie.
Yes. They knew each other well enough and exchanged letters sometimes, but then after the Abdication crisis Dickie just decided Bertie was his new best friend instead of David. The Queen Mum regarded this with some suspicion, naturally. Because of that, Dickie was never as close to Bertie as he had been to David. But they still got on very well. Here’s Dickie with David, Bertie, and their other brother Harry. I know there are some pictures of Dickie and Bertie hanging out, but I can’t find them online right now.
*hugs* LOLz, when he keeps his mouth shut! XD
Oh Will is delish in uniform. Rawr! The are handsome boys, with William being more classically handsome. I rarely ever go for classically handsome. Bertie, David and Andrew are actually sane crushes where I'm concerned! LOL!
Y'know, I wanna know more about Timothy Lawrence actually - Princess Anne's husb. - and Mark Philips. Dunno why but I'm becoming interested in Princess Anne's life. Enlighten me as only you can, oh learned and trustworthy tumblr queen. x
Well, both of them are fairly private people so I only know of the dirt I’ve heard from tabloids. Mark Philips is a bit of a sleaze. He had a love child while married to Princess Anne. Anne started up with Timothy Laurence while still married, but after things had fallen apart. He was an equerry to Queen Elizabeth. Apparently there was a minor scandal when some “intimate” letters between the two were stolen. As far as I know the juicy bits have never leaked. This was around the time of the Charles/Diana and Andrew/Fergie marriage break downs so it wasn’t as major a scandal as it could’ve been. When three of the Queen’s four children are in failed marriages the tabloids get spread thin covering it all. Timothy’s got that kind of stern Scottish sailor look about him.
Honestly, I think if Anne were a bit more stylish and if her marriage hadn’t gone south right in the middle of scandal season Anne might be considered quite the scandalous lady and have a reputation more like Princess Margaret’s instead of as being the boring one in the family.
Call me crazy but I think the monarchy has had its handsome moments in the 20th century... I have major crushes on David and especially Bertie, but IMHO, Prince Andrew is the most delish of them all... My lil bro looks too much like Harry and William's goin' bald - gimme Andrew any day!! LOL!
PS; It's been too long since I told you; I love your blog! ^.^ x
Andrew has his moments. Especially when he keeps his mouth shut.
I just prefer William and Harry because I think they have such pretty faces. Will is not really suited to the bald guy look, but when he puts on a hat he’s really fine. But hair or no hair he was absolutely flawless around age eighteen. If your lil bro really looks like Harry I would encourage him to come to America when he comes of age. He will find himself very popular.
I think the monarchy can only improve in looks, really. Kate is stunning, Kate's parents aged well and really, the only bad thing about Will is that he is aging quickly, but he has nice features. When they have children, I think they will be attractive, but if not, their kid will obviously marry someone attractive now that the pressure is off for finding someone with a suitable royal background. With a wide expanse of people to chose from, I am sure their kid will fall for someone attractive. Grace Kelly pretty much corrected Monaco, with a few exceptions.
Will and Kate’s children will be stunning. Can you imagine Will’s lovely features (from Diana) with Kate’s green eyes and glossy brown hair? They should also be really tall, too. The next generation of Windsors will probably look like supermodels.
Somebody mentioned "ugly money" in the future due to Prince Charles's wonderful countenance. I think I might share some thoughts.
Tbh, I think Philip ruined the British Royal Family's good-looking genes. They used to be quite rather handsome and beautiful before he came along. I mean, George IV and Edward VII, though both obese, were known be handsome and dashing. Queen Victoria and her daughters were quite nice and George V's family was all gorgeous, ngl. Queen Mum, when she was young, was the most ravishing of all (Black hair and dark blue eyes,yk). The Queen was nice looking and beautiful is an understatement for Princess Margaret.
Then Philip came along (i know he was handsome when he was young, so was his uncle Dickie, but something went terribly wrong). And now, we have Charles, Andrews, Anne and Edward. Very pleasant to look at, don't you think! Not to mention a lot of fabulous scandals that company their sights too!
I actually think it’s an old Windsor family trait, dating back to Victoria and Albert and their children. You’d have someone who was attractive for a few years in their late teens and early twenties, but then quickly go down hill after that. Except for Charles, the Queen’s kids are all like that.
If you don’t believe me, see this picture of Princess Anne, age 19:
Now, what is interesting is that all of George V and Mary of Teck’s kids did not show this trait (except perhaps Prince Henry, though his problems seemed to center purely around weight gain and hair loss) and kept what good looks they had over time. David and Bertie both had wrinkly skin after a certain age (mid-forties for Bertie, fiftyish for David) but that was purely smoking related and they still had nice features.
Now, where Philip may enter in is that he and Elizabeth are second-cousins-once-removed on his dad’s side and third-cousins on his mom’s side. So Philip and Elizabeth’s kids got a double dose of the “young and cute… OMFG what happened?” genes from Victoria and the Hanovers. That explains Anne, Andrew, and Edward. As for Charles, he’s just unlucky and got the worst genes from both sides of the family.
Diana’s genes have cancelled this bad aging quality out to some extent. William is still a very good-looking man, but he was definitely at his peak in his late teens. But the downturn was nowhere near as severe as Andrew or Edward. Harry seems like he’ll age very nicely. So if we assume the Windsors are done inbreeding for good, hopefully this trait will die out forever.
Catherine Middleton did not change religion before marrying Prince WIlliam. She was baptized into the Church of England. She had not been confirmed yet, however. This was corrected by the Bishop of London who confirmed her in the Chapel Royal of St. James Palace in March. The Middleton family is, and has always been, Church of England.
And, members of the Royal Family marrying Roman Catholics isn't merely a "no no". It's illegal by the Act of Succession.
With the marrying into the family with a different religion post: I know Catholic is a big BIG no no, but wasn't Autumn Phillips a Catholic when she met Peter? I don't know what happened there. And I also know Kate Middleton did change religions shortly before her wedding as well.
Autumn converted so as to avoid drama; I don’t think was a very passionate Catholic to being with. Kate didn’t change religion, though perhaps she started going to church with the royal family.
There have been several dynasties in Egypt over the years. Of course, the most famous Egyptian royal was Cleopatra, but that was obviously a while ago.
The most recent Egyptian monarch was Fuad II, who took the throne as a baby after his father King Farouk abdicated during the Revolution of 1952. The whole family left the country, and the baby King’s reign ended a year later when the monarchy was officially abolished. I don’t know too much about this family, but google might tell you more about where they ended up and what they’re up to now.
Wouldn't religion be an issue, though? Has there ever been a royal bride who wasn't Anglican after the religion was established? There aren't very many Anglicans in the States. Would Episcopalian count?
Episcopalian would be find. It’s all the same church basically. The only rules are against Catholics. Any prospective royal bride would have to be willing to raise her children Anglican, though I doubt that could be a legal issue, more of a family one.
A Muslim might be controversial and generate a scandal, but it would be legal.
It's lucky you're American & wouldn't have to deal with how ugly the money will get when Charles becomes king!
If they’re smart they’ll photoshop him until he looks like Brad Pitt. For centuries before photography they made ugly guys look good enough to be on money.
Either way, I don’t think he’ll be on the throne that long. They you get Will and Kate.
I don’t know how y’all handle your money, but if I were in charge I’d maneuver to get special “memorial” currency with the Queen’s face still on it for a few years after her death into wide circulation.
Actually, it was crocheting that she taught to her sons. But you're correct. Her eldest is the only one who continued it.
And needlepoint. God, I’m at school so I don’t have my books, but apparently David did the seat covers at Fort Belvedere. It was in Wallis’s memoir I believe as well as a few other books. If I’m not mistaken he also knew how to knit.
I would add that due to the Royal Marriages Act, Harry couldn't marry anyone without the Sovereign's approval, unless he wanted to forfeit his place in the Succession, which I doubt he'd ever do. So I don't see him marrying a poor girl from the Third World. I can't think of a single royal, at least in Europe, who's ever done that.
But would the Queen really deny her approval? In this day and age? If they’d been dating for a few years and the girl didn’t have a bad reputation the vast majority of the public would be on Harry’s side. Queen Elizabeth knows what she can get away with it. People would call her classist and racist and want her head on a pike.
I agree it’s unlikely, simply because he doesn’t know any women like that. Royals tend to marry people who are in their upperclass circles or who live, work, or go to school near their usual stomping grounds. Frederik and Mary are the major exception, and that wouldn’t have happened if Frederik hadn’t spoken English. But it should give all girls hope that at least once there was a Prince who married a woman he met in a pub thousands of miles from his home country.
I think a lot of people would clutch their pearls of Henry and Pippa dated- brothers marrying sisters is completely legitimate, but it feels a little incestuous to be openly flirting with your sister-in-law as millions watch.
I guess it’s a cultural thing. In America brothers dating sisters is very common in small towns. The main issue would be what would happen if Harry and Pippa had a nasty break-up. It could get pretty awkward.
You sometimes hear of weddings where the best man and maid of honor (either siblings of the couple, best friends, or one of each) used to be a couple and aren’t anymore and don’t want to pose for pictures together.
I'm pretty sure the Queen likes Kate, she's sorta perfect for William.
Do you think the Queen would care if Harry marries like..a really poor girl from a third world country? It would be interesting.
The Queen might care, but she’d know better than to make her feelings known. Philip might make a few offensive comments, though. They’d have to keep him on a really short leash at the wedding.
Honestly, I’d be more worried about Charles. He couldn’t forbid or blatently disapprove of anything, but with his mistaken belief he’s “worldly” I could see him making Harry’s wife very uncomfortable. He would make all kinds of assumptions about her purely based on where she was from.
I only know of Wallis being an American, but can the royals marry Americans or other foreign girls, like say Harry?
Yes! There might be some complaints from female royal subjects (“What’s wrong with us English girls?” wrote one woman to her local newspaper at the time of the Abdication) but no one would really care. It would help if the woman was from a commonwealth country, too. Like Autumn Philips, who was originally from Canada.
