I just saw the trailer. Their Bertie and Elizabeth are way off, also they refer to her as HRH when she would’ve been HM. Obviously they were trying to copy Elizabeth’s famous outfit with the feather hat but the copy looks cheap and just not right.
Bill Murray is one of my favorite actors, though, and I’ve always heard he’s a great guy. He’s not right for FDR, but he might give a performance that overcomes this, like Colin Firth did in The King’s Speech.
But just looking at the whole concept of the movie and the trailer I am expecting total fiction and not any level of historical accuracy at all. I don’t know how the idea of FDR’s affair and then the royal visit will mesh. I don’t know from a historical perspective what Bertie knew about FDR (and other people’s…) infidelities, but I do know he didn’t approve of adultery and tended to align himself with people he considered to be good family men like himself. Because of that I’ve always assumed he didn’t know, or didn’t believe, that FDR was a womanizer.
I’m kind of amazed by how off the Elizabeth is. I mean, neither Helena Bonham Carter or Natalie Dormer looked much like her but both of them were way closer to accurate than this lady.
I just really hope this doesn’t go into the territory of being offensive or disrespectful to Bertie and Elizabeth or any other members of the royal family. That’s what I hope with most of these movies, and I can’t tell you how often I’m disappointed.
